Recover failed sheets — the re-scan workflow
15 September 2026
Steps
1. Read the failed count and identify the papers
Open the batch, note how many sheets failed, and pull the matching physical papers from the pile using the names/roll numbers on the sheets.
2. Diagnose the cause before re-scanning
Look at each sheet — shadow, fold, cropped corner, dark scan, stray marks. If several sheets share one cause, fix the setup (light, flatness) not just the sheets.
3. Re-scan the fixed sheets into a small PDF
Re-scan only the corrected sheets into one small PDF — no need to re-scan the whole batch.
4. Run a mini-batch with the same key
Create a new batch, upload only the re-scanned PDF, attach the same answer key, process, and download. Students' scores are now complete — no manual merging needed.
A few sheets in your batch show as failed — here is the clean recovery loop that CheckOMR (By Navodaya Study) makes simple, getting every student a score without re-scanning the whole pile. The physical papers are safe; this is about turning them back into results fast. (If you want the causes first, read why sheets get marked failed.)
Before you start
- The batch with the failed count showing in live status.
- The physical failed papers pulled from the pile.
- The same answer key used for the main batch.
Steps
1. Read the failed count and identify the papers
Open the batch and note the failed count. Match each failed scan to its physical paper by the name/roll visible on the page. Pull those exact papers — you are recovering specific students, not the whole pile.
2. Diagnose the cause before re-scanning
Look at each failed sheet and find its problem: a shadow band, a fold through the bubble area, a cropped corner, an over-dark scan, a doodle crossing the bubble rows. If three or more sheets share the same cause, fix the setup — change the light, flatten properly, clean the lens — before re-scanning. Fixing the cause saves re-scans; fixing only sheets brings the problem back on the next page.
3. Re-scan the fixed sheets into a small PDF
Re-scan only the recovered papers into a single small PDF. There is no need to re-scan the whole pile — the main batch is done and stays as-is.
4. Run a mini-batch with the same key
Create a new batch named for the recovery (e.g. "Mock 12 – re-scans"), upload the small PDF, attach the same answer key, and process. The recovered sheets return with full results — marked PDFs and Excel rows like any other batch. Keep both exports together in your records; the main batch plus the mini-batch covers every student.
When the failed count is high
More than a handful of failures means the scanning setup broke mid-exam — a light change, a smudged lens, a scanner tray feeding crooked. Stop, fix the setup, then re-scan the whole affected room rather than sheet by sheet. Ten re-scans saved by one cause fixed.

- Upload your first batch — the main flow, if you're new here.
